What are the materials of Chinese rebar?

The materials of Chinese rebar mainly include the following categories:

  1. Carbon Structural Steel:
    • Low – carbon Steel: The carbon content is between 0.02% and 0.25%. Rebar made of this material has good toughness and excellent weldability. It is suitable for applications that require high toughness and frequent welding, such as some small – sized building components or structures with high requirements for welding performance.
    • Medium – carbon Steel: The carbon content is between 0.25% and 0.60%. The rebar made of medium – carbon steel material has higher hardness and strength and is suitable for building structures that need to bear greater pressure and weight, such as the main frames of large – scale buildings and bridges.
  2. Low – alloy Structural Steel: A small amount of alloy elements (such as manganese, silicon, vanadium, niobium, etc.) are added to the carbon steel. The addition of alloy elements improves the strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and other properties of the steel. The rebar made of low – alloy structural steel material has the advantages of low – carbon, low – alloy, high – strength, good toughness and weldability, and is widely used in various construction projects.

According to the Chinese National Standard (GB1499.2), rebar can be classified into the following grades according to performance:

  1. HRB335: The former grade is 20MnSi. It is a common rebar with a strength grade of 335MPa and is suitable for general building structures, such as residential and commercial buildings.
  2. HRB400: The former grades are 20MnSiV, 20MnSiNb and 20MnTi. It is a high – strength rebar with a strength grade of 400MPa and is more suitable than HRB335 for building structures that bear larger loads, such as high – rise buildings and large – scale industrial buildings.
  3. HRB500: With a strength grade of 500MPa, it is an ultra – high – strength rebar and has very high tensile strength and torsional strength. It is suitable for special engineering projects, such as large – scale bridges and expressways.
  4. HRB600: It belongs to rebar with relatively high strength. As the construction industry’s requirements for steel strength continue to increase, HRB600 rebar is also gradually being used, but its current application range is relatively narrow.

In addition, there are also hot – rolled fine – grained reinforcing bars, such as HRBF335, HRBF400, HRBF500, etc. Their fine – grained structure is formed through controlled rolling and cooling processes. While ensuring strength, they also have good toughness and weldability. For building structures with high seismic requirements, seismic – resistant rebar marked with “E”, such as HRB400E and HRBF400E, will be used.
